People have different ways of describing a healthy lifestyle. But for most, it means living life in a way that helps the person to be both physically and emotionally healthy. Many things go into creating a healthy lifestyle, including:
 | Positive relationships
|
 | Appropriate exercise
|
 | Proper nutrition
|
 | Adequate rest
|
Wellness involves both choice and action. The choices you make each day, and the actions you take on those choices can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Making positive choices in the areas of physical fitness, stress, work, relationships, medication, and nutrition - and then acting on those choices - promotes a sense of accomplishment and well being.

The Dietary Guidelines were established to help people choose foods that will meet their nutritional requirements, promote health, support active lives and reduce the risk of chronic disease. These Guidelines are meant to be simple and sensible suggestions for people trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle: 1) Eat a variety of foods.
2) Balance the food you eat with physical activity to maintain or improve your weight.
3) Have plenty of fruits, vegetables and grain products because they help to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.
4) Eat foods that are low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.
5) Choose a diet with moderate sugar, salt and sodium.
6) Avoid alcohol and smoking.

When you exercise, it isn't just your fitness that improves - you'll feel better all over. You should of course always take care when you exercise, especially if it's a long time since you last exercised. Here are a few pointers to help you before you start.
Why exercise?
Exercise can make you feel less tired, less stressed and gives you increased vitality. It can also make you feel happier since it has a kind of anti-depressant effect. There is a definite feel-good factor about exercise and anybody who embarks on a properly designed programme will be benefited.
Most people like to look good as well as feel good and this is another area where exercise can help. Exercise helps to control and burn body fat, strengthen and tone muscles and improve posture.
Your health in the long term
The health benefits of exercise are well documented and numerous. Exercise protects against heart diseases and stroke. Other benefits may include a reduced risk of the development of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and the risk of cancer of the colon. It may also help in controlling the blood pressure, improving circulation and may have a beneficial effect on blood fats. Exercise is also important for controlling body fat levels.
Weight bearing exercise (like walking) protects against developing osteoporosis (brittle-bones) later in life. Exercise can also have a very positive impact on other disorders such as menstrual problems, pre-menstrual problems, pre-menstrual syndrome and constipation. It is important also to remember that you are never too old to start exercising and experience its benefits, providing a doctor's advice is sought. Exercise can slow down the ageing process.
